AP Much of the lake bed at Lake Lanier in Georgia is exposed as water levels continue to drop. The seemingly never-ending drought gripping much of the Southeast may alter how this weekend's Nextel Cup race at Atlanta is run. Georgia is under a state of emergency over rapidly dwindling water supplies. The historic Georgia drought may force changes in NASCAR's race plans next weekend at Atlanta. Teams have been told not to wash their big rigs and motor coaches. There has been speculation that NASCAR may change the weekend's format to make the 500 an "impound" race, with no practice after qualifying. Monday's car-of-tomorrow test is also in question, although NASCAR officials yesterday offered no indications it could be canceled. Teams use copious amounts of water to cool their engines during practice runs for qualifying; not a significant amount in the grand scheme of things, but enough perhaps to make for poor PR when the governor has called a state of emergency. All outdoor watering has been banned, because Atlanta has received only two inches of rain over the past two months. The Monday test which might be in peril is supposed to be the debut of Dale Earnhardt Jr. in a Hendrick car -- if you don't count his little jaunt in Kyle Busch's wrecked ride earlier this year.
